Powered by passion

Heather examines how society profits from over-sexualisation, and the harm it can do to our selves and communities.

Working alongside scientists to explore the possibilities of liquid crystals, she came up with the Powered by Passion concept.

Removing the top layer of an LCD screen, and replacing the lenses of sunglasses with the leftover film, she created an interactive installation which forces the viewer to be alone with the sexualised content.

During their alone time, the viewer watches a 3 minute loop of popular adverts which use sexualisation techniques on typically mundane products.

The layered “powered by passion” text is visible to everyone, as well as the viewer. The text uses a deliberate mix of grungy S&M style textures, gaudy colours, and bold lettering. This sets a direct contrast against the adverts we’re so de-sensitized to.

As the user spends alone time with the screen, they become hyper-aware of the sexualisation techniques, their own opinion of sexuality and self-ideals, and how they are being perceived to onlookers.

Materials: LCD screen, sunglasses, digital tools.
